Gedurende die tijd denkt Ulises na over het karakter van zijn uitgaven en hoe die verschillen van de oude literatuur zoals hij die vroeger beoefende. Hij voelt enige druk van zijn literaire achterban en verwoordt die gedachten in het pamflet dat in 1975 zowel in het Mexicaanse tijdschrift Plural werd gepubliceerd als in Kontexts, het blad dat Michael Gibbs in Engeland en vervolgens in Amsterdam uitgaf. Deze tekst, The new art of Making Books is heden ten dage in meer dan dertig talen vertaald en vormt een filosofische reflectie van blijvend belang. De titel refereert aan het polemische gedicht van Lope de Vega, The new art of making Comedies en was vooral bedoeld voor literaire lezers. 

Het begint met de volgende definitie:

WHAT A BOOK IS
A book is a sequence of spaces.
Each of these spaces is perceived at a different moment - a book is also a sequence of moments.
A writer, contrary to the popular opinion, does not write books.
A writer writes texts.
The fact, that a text is contained in a book, comes only from the dimensions of such a text; or, in the case of a series of short texts (poems, for instance), from their number.
A literary (prose) text contained in a book ignores the fact that the book is an autonomous space-time sequence.

Verderop stelt Carrión de oude tegenover de nieuwe kunst, met soms grappige implicaties.
"Old art's authors have the gift for language, the talent for language, the ease for language.
For new art's authors language is an enigma, a problem, the book hints at ways to solve it."

En "In a book of the old art words transmit the author's intention. That's why he chooses them carefully.
In a book of the new art words do't transmit any intention: they're used to form a text which is an element of a book, and it is this book, as a totality, that transmits the author's intention."
"Plagiarism is the starting point of the creative activity in the new art."
"In order to be able to read the new art, and to understand it, you don't need to spend five years in a Faculty of English."

Naar deze tekst wordt internationaal veelvuldig verwezen. Het boek dat behoort tot de "nieuwe kunst", elders spreekt Ulises over Bookwork, ik zou het betitelen als kunstenaarsboek, brengt me op de vraag waar de wortels liggen van zijn radicale afstand van het narratief.
