Can the essence of a website called Being Human created between 1997 and 2007, be translated into a book in 2023? A book as a derivative of something that is gone, which at least, now can no longer be experienced as in the time when it was made. … Being Human has always been a linguistic universe, in which different voices, languages, poems, codes and variables mingle into a labyrinthine whole. And so it appeared a challenge and logical to me to try to capture Being Human into a book, into a collection of poetry.

"Ars Aemula Naturae ('Art is the rival of Nature') is an art academy in Leiden. It should not be confused with Natura Artis Magistra (’Nature is the teacher of the Arts'), which is the name of the Amsterdam zoo.

I work as an art model in the first one, where a special emphasis is still placed on the practice of drawing after nature. Being in the position of 'nature', I assume that what I face is 'art'. There is no rivalry involved; however, I sometimes envy the position of the buffalo, the ostrich or the zebra, who are all thought to be able to teach."

‘Thoughts while posing’ gathers texts and images that I have imagined during my side-job as an academic model.

Tie, october 2023

I made this book with a tied binding from handmade gampi paper which I prepared from scratch (with the exception of collecting the actual bark, that I ordered). I cooked the gampi bark in an alkaline solution, washed it and then beat it with a hammer to separate the fibres to get it ready for sheet forming.

I then formed the sheets using an improvised mold and deckle and embedded the threads within the sheets. When the pages were dry, I tied the threads together.

The binding I used is my variation of the tied binding by Alisa Golden.

Chess, augustus 2023

I made this notation book and chess set entirely out of handmade paper. The pieces can be taken off the cover and placed on the chessboard which can be taken out of the book and unfolded. The notation book inside can be used to note down every move made in the chess game.

The cover, the chess board and the chess pieces all contain magnets so they stick together. I used abaca and kozo to create the differences in colour.

Rocks, juni 2023

The box contains several small books that I turned into rocks by crystallizing them. Half of the books I crystallized using borax, and the other half I crystallized using salt.

Speech, mei 2023

This is a book about the sounds of speech in English. It contains pictures of the 44 sounds of speech needed in English pronunciation. The covers depict an abstraction of the articulators needed to produce the sounds of speech. The book is made from metal (alpacca), the pages are Japanese washi, and it can be worn as a necklace.

·L·e·a·k·y··W·a·l·k·s· is a book of my past walks – walks with friends, co-authors, and strangers – that can accompany future walks. Walks are an essential component to my life and my artistic practice. I walk to connect, disconnect and, also, to share. The slowness of walking is a vital ingredient to shift how we encounter the familiar; with this book, I invite you to walk alongside me and sense the complexities of our surroundings, to connect presence to the present, and to initiate conversations on our position in the spaces we provisionally inhabit (however, through our activities we have impacted those spaces irremediably).

·L·e·a·k·y··W·a·l·k·s· is a book with many collaborators: first and foremost graphic designer Peter van de Hoogen of COUP Amsterdam who co-developed this book (and we walked down many different paths before arriving on this design); artist and writer Erik Benjamins, who wrote short pieces to accompany the works incorporated in the book; and curator and poet Roy Voragen, he wrote the book´s prelude.

Discovery of the Well-known, december 2013

The publication Discovery of the Well-Known includes paintings by Isolde Venrooy from the period 2011–2013. The paintings were created by collecting, cutting, painting and placing paper on canvas. Venrooy uses paper with specific origin in her work, such as travel brochures.
In the work of Venrooy humans share the pure element of time with others. Bathers who share the seawater, or skiers in the shining white of snow, are connected by a common current time. Venrooy establishes this connection in a very concrete, traditional way. By recoating paper cuttings with monochromatic color figures are isolated and merged into a new moment of time.
The book Discovery of the Well-Known guides the reader through several enlargements of the works. From a detail to the whole and back. Just as it is required to observe the paintings closer and step away from them in order to experience the full richness of the extraordinary work.
In some later works Venrooy takes a new step, that of abstraction. Which, without the materiality of the earlier works, had probably never been taken. The images disappear and what remains is the pure act of collage and the abstract landscape.
The title Discovery of the Well-Known gives the viewer an assignment: try to discover the already known.

Pathfinder, october 2020

PATHFINDER consists of ten silkscreen cards with walking instructions. The texts on the cards direct the walker’s senses in various ways – either by questioning or by guiding in a welcoming manner. The instructions evoke a brief action or movement of thought, which activates the senses and sets body and mind in motion. This leads to walks that offer new opportunities for relationships and connections between the visitor and her environment. The straightforward instructions function as poetic suggestions for alternative scenarios that can be put into practice. They invite the participant to act: to become active, anticipate, entwine, re-situate. By walking slightly differently, self-evidences are put into question and alternative possibilities explored. The walks “de-filter” looking and extend it with other ways of perception. PATHFINDER is about sensory experiencing variations to obvious points of view and positions – and about the pleasure of discovery. The walking instructions are inspired by a reciprocal relation between text and site. Isolde’s renewed interest in her Indonesian family history made her rethink relations between body and place and the influence of language on perception. Our Silver Lining, november 2021

This publication originated in the summer of 2018, right after I graduated from the photography department at the university of the Arts, Utrecht (NL). In that period I often lacked the right motivation, space and time to make work, and filming and photographing with my mobile phone turned out to be the perfect way to continue to make work in an accessible way. Under the working title 'OBSERVATIONS' I collected —the title says it all— everyday observations, which I eventually brought together in a video of the same name. This video was previously shown during Museum Night 2019 in Amsterdam. I initially did not take this way of working so seriously, but now it has become an indispensable part of my practice; 'Our Silver Lining' is a collection of everyday moments that keeps on growing. All videos and photos in this publication are unstaged and shot with an iPhone 8 between the summer of 2018 and the summer of 2020, in various locations around the world. The title of this project refers to a text I came across on a house in Ostend (BE), during a family weekend in the fall of 2018. According to some a cliché, but I experienced this as a piece of poetry you sometimes just stumble upon. Ideally, this publication will be the first in a series, which I want to self publish on an irregular basis, showing a new selection of my archive every time. By working this way, I force myself to take the images out my phone and look at my work with more critically. The Nieuwe Binnenweg is a long, lively street in Rotterdam. This map is an exploration of the experiences of people who live there, providing insight into the diverse perspectives coexisting within the street. It emerged from conversations with 54 residents in their homes, discussing how they value their homes and the surrounding environment. The map delves into their preferred places, how they discuss different parts of the street, and memories associated with specific locations.

These URLs Will Save the IRL, May 2023

These URLs will save the IRL is a result of a two-year-long speculation on the topic of German art schools’ websites. The project started a hypothesis that German art schools sometimes deliberately create opaque interaction patterns to create an obstacle for potential applicants. During the research, I conducted UX tests, accessed archived versions of the websites, made design/UX analysis, comparison tables, manuscript writing, and travelling on the spot undercover to compare the website and real-life accessibility. This turned into the publication, written by me and collaboratively designed by 25 students of University of arts Bremen and Klasse Digitale Grafik Hamburg.

What would happen if you could grow a word? In this book, a series of textual Seedlings_ sprout and set off on a journey for the discovery of kinships between words. Born digital, the Seedlings_ migrate from the browser to the pages in a process that explores different ways of writing in collaboration. Seedlings_: Walk in Time is a book written through the interaction between a human writer and a group of algorithms, both feeding off the vast world of language people have been tending to for many many years. Moving between the humorous, the poetic, the narrative, and the visual, this book portrays an ecosystem where the bonds that tie words together come alive and speak back to us.

Dit boek is gemaakt door met kleur te drukken op een kopie van een kaart uit 1860 van de stad Groningen. Geïnspireerd door kaarten en reizen heb ik hiervan een boek samengesteld. Het is een afwisseling van drukken op kaarten en de achterkant van de kaart zoals die er uit ziet. Ik vond het leuk om mijn ingreep op de pagina's te laten zien en de informatie van de kaart letterlijk als pagina te gebruiken.

Dit is een kopie van een boek geïnspireerd op een reis en verblijf bij een Artist Residency Cill Rialaig in Ierland 2023. Het bevat etsen die ik daarna in mijn atelier heb gemaakt en een tekst die ik gepubliceerd heb in de BK informatie. Deze etsen zijn gebaseerd op tekeningen van de omgeving die ik vaak uit mijn hoofd heb gemaakt als ik 's avonds in mijn cottage was.

Onder bovengenoemde titel ben ik al geruime tijd bezig aan een grootschalig schilderijen project.
Een groots onderwerp op een klein formaat. Hoewel deze werken zich op het eerste gezicht als abstract tonen, is de aanwezigheid van de zee nooit ver weg. Het zijn afbeeldingen van deze schilderijen die samen de doorlopende lijn vormen van het leporello.

Er bestaat een eeuwenoude hymne die eveneens de titel Ave Maris Stella heeft. Deze hymne is o.m. verwerkt in de Mariavespers van Claudio Monteverdi. Het is de abstracte structuur van de muziek in combinatie met het schilderkunstige project wat zich verbeeldt in deze uitgave.

Deze uitgave heeft de vorm van een leporello, die is gesigneerd en genummerd.
