one off
Lisa Smithson
13, 14, 20 and 21 January 2023
Collected notebooks was shown in a relaxed setting.
On the 13th, 20th and 21st of January visitors were invited to come and join in the process of making a new flag for the ARTisBOOK flagpole. They can also work on making books. Participants were encouraged to bring their own materials (paper and textile). The flag was hoisted on Saturday 21 January as we raise a glass to simplicity.
On the 14th of January Jan Verbogt joined me to attempt to perform a book, that is, to approach sound in the same way the books approach visual materials -improvisational and reactions on what is there.
The space of ARTisBOOK furnished with spots to rest, sit, look, make, sew, chat and be together.
The books I make are for me like diaries. Looking back on them, I know where I was, what season it was, how I was feeling and what I was busy with at the time. I see each book as a composition of moments that eventually create a whole (book). I like to have a book with me when I travel and when I say travel I include the trip from my house to my (former) studio, or to the park. The books are companions.
The books have been made over the last 3-4 years. I do not date them, yet I know when they were made. Drawing is for me a way to express things. The images are often abstract and open to interpretation which makes them less of a pronouncement than a proposal.
Opening hours:
During one off, our normal opening hours apply: 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., except on Saturday, January 14. Then we were open from the start of the performance at 3:00 pm.
